Atelier Write's Unravel: A Transformative Hair Salon in Tokyo
In the heart of Tokyo's Kiyosumi Shirakawa district, a former warehouse has been reimagined as a dynamic hair salon by Japanese studio Atelier Write. The project, named Unravel, showcases a clever approach to adaptive reuse, where a rigid industrial space is transformed into a versatile and aesthetically pleasing salon.
A Space for Transformation
Atelier Write's founder, Takuya Sakamoto, aimed to create a salon that could adapt to various activities, from hosting seminars to retail pop-ups. The key innovation lies in the suspension of mirrors, shelves, and curtains from industrial rails, allowing for a reconfigurable layout. This design choice not only provides flexibility but also encourages a unique relationship between the salon and its urban surroundings.
Mirror Magic
Three large mirrors, integrated with galvanised steel worktops and plug sockets, take center stage. These mirrors can be effortlessly pulled into the salon's core, defining the space and creating a focal point. Alternatively, they can be pushed to the sides when a more open atmosphere is desired, demonstrating the salon's adaptability.
Industrial Aesthetics with a Soft Touch
The predominantly metal interior is softened by a subtle pastel green paint on the warehouse's framework, adding a touch of warmth. Full-height curtains in a pastel pink-toned mesh fabric further enhance the ambiance, providing privacy for VIP and spa areas. The furniture, including green steel shelving and timber tables, maintains an industrial character while being easily movable, allowing for quick adjustments to the layout.
Blending with the Industrial Surroundings
The project respects the existing warehouse's industrial nature. Industrial steel racks are used in the shampoo and reception areas, seamlessly blending with the original structure. The suspended mirrors and shelves, finished in electro-galvanised steel, create a neutral yet striking contrast within the space.
A Staircase to Creativity
A green-painted steel staircase leads to a studio space on the warehouse's first floor, showcasing raw, unfinished surfaces. This area likely serves as a creative hub, further emphasizing the salon's versatility and connection to the city's dynamic culture.
A New Perspective on Adaptive Reuse
Unravel challenges the traditional concept of a hair salon, inviting a reciprocal relationship between the establishment and its urban context.
