Blue Beetle Director Offers DCU Movie Update After Discussions with Peter Safran
A recent interview with one of the DCU's co-heads has shed light on the future of Blue Beetle and his status as a DCU hero. What's the latest on this beloved character?
Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios alongside James Gunn, was asked about the potential return of Jaime Reyes in an interview with TheWrap. While the Blue Beetle movie predated the official start of the DCU, Gunn has confirmed that the character exists within the new universe. Safran revealed that the Blue Beetle chapter is far from over and that the character is, as far as he knows, a part of the DCU.
He expressed his enthusiasm for continuing to work with actor Xolo Maridueña and the entire Reyes family, stating, 'I don’t think that chapter has been closed. I’ve had friendly conversations with Peter Safran and John Rickard. And I know James is a huge fan of Blue Beetle, and he’s said multiple times that Blue Beetle is part of the DCU.'
The director also hinted at a long-rumored animated series featuring the Reyes family, suggesting that fans might see more of the family in the future. He said, 'I personally would love to continue Blue Beetle 2, Blue Beetle 3, work with Xolo (Maridueña) and the whole Reyes family. But we have had conversations of how we can expand the adventures of the Reyes family via animation.'
However, it's important to note that the 2023 Blue Beetle film is not considered canon to the overall DCU. Gunn has clarified that, while Blue Beetle exists in the DCU, the film and any DC media released before the first four projects for the DCU won't be part of his canon.
An animated television show based on Blue Beetle has also been rumored for some time. Originally expected in 2024, the series was anticipated to serve as a launching point for a proper DCU film. However, recent updates suggest the show might be delayed until 2026, according to Xolo Maridueña.
