Japan Protests Chinese Military's Radar Lock on Japanese Jets
Tensions escalate as Japan protests after a Chinese military jet, operating from the aircraft carrier Liaoning, locked its radar on Japanese fighter jets near Okinawa. This incident follows a recent decline in diplomatic relations due to Japan's controversial remarks on Taiwan.
On Saturday, Japan's Defense Ministry reported that the Chinese J-15 fighter jet intermittently targeted Japanese F-15 jets with its radar for approximately three minutes in the late afternoon and 30 minutes in the evening. The radar lock was detected by Japanese fighters that had been scrambled to monitor a potential airspace violation by China. No Japanese airspace was breached, and no injuries or damage were reported.
Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi expressed deep regret over the incident, describing it as a dangerous act that exceeded the necessary scope for safe aircraft operations. Japan has lodged a formal protest and demanded strict preventive measures from China.
The Chinese government and military have remained silent on the matter. Earlier, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian defended China's naval activities, asserting compliance with international law. The incident marks a significant deterioration in relations between the two countries.
The dispute stems from Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's statement in November, suggesting potential military involvement if China takes action against Taiwan, a self-governing island claimed by Beijing. The Liaoning aircraft carrier's passage between Okinawa and Miyako islands, accompanied by aircraft takeoff and landing exercises, further heightened tensions.
This radar lock incident is unprecedented, as it involves Japanese and Chinese military aircraft. In 2013, a Chinese warship targeted a radar on a Japanese destroyer. Additionally, the Philippine coast guard reported China firing flares towards a fisheries bureau plane in the South China Sea, a common tactic to warn planes to leave what China considers its airspace.
