The Los Angeles Clippers faced off against the Houston Rockets in a gripping matchup, ultimately succumbing to a 102-95 defeat on the road Tuesday night. This game marked the first of two back-to-back contests between these teams.
One striking aspect of the game was the Clippers' struggle from beyond the three-point line, managing to sink only eight shots from deep. In stark contrast, the Rockets found significant success, hitting 14 out of 28 attempts from three-point territory, showcasing their shooting prowess.
After the first quarter, Houston held a narrow lead of 27-26. Among the highlights, star forward Kevin Durant had a shaky start, making only 3 of his 10 attempts early on. However, he soon regained his offensive rhythm, finishing as the game’s top scorer with 26 points and grabbing six rebounds.
The initial two quarters were a back-and-forth exchange, with both teams delivering competitive efforts. The Clippers, shooting 42% from the field in the first half, managed to edge ahead with a 52-51 lead at halftime. Kris Dunn stood out for Los Angeles during this period, providing exemplary defense and contributing significantly with four steals and five assists before the break.
By halftime, three players from the Rockets had scored 11 points each, highlighting their balanced scoring. However, Houston struggled with ball security, committing 10 turnovers, which the Clippers exploited effectively. The Rockets also showcased their long-range shooting, netting nine three-pointers by the end of the first half.
As play resumed, both teams continued their offensive display. Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard found his stride, successfully extending his streak of scoring 20 or more points to 32 consecutive games. Leonard concluded the evening with 24 points and eight rebounds, leading his team. Close behind, John Collins added 17 points, while Bennedict Mathurin made a notable debut with the Clippers, contributing nine points, three rebounds, and three steals after joining the team through a trade.
Entering the final quarter, the Rockets maintained a slim advantage at 78-72. They quickly surged ahead with a rapid 7-0 run, pushing their lead to 85-72 and prompting a much-needed timeout from the Clippers. Unfortunately for Los Angeles, they started the quarter cold, missing their first eight attempts from the field, allowing the Rockets to widen the gap.
Despite trailing by as many as 15 points, the Clippers made a late push with an 8-0 run that reignited hope among their fans. However, the Rockets managed to maintain their composure and secured the win.
Both teams are set to compete again on Wednesday at the Toyota Center, with the next tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m., just ahead of the NBA All-Star break.
