Get ready for an immersive audio revolution! CULTVR's Theatre Dome, a groundbreaking arts center in the UK, has just taken its game-changing experience to the next level.
The Future of Immersive Arts is Here
Since its launch in 2019, CULTVR has been at the forefront of immersive arts, transforming Cardiff into a hub for extended reality (XR) and live performance. Now, with the installation of a cutting-edge 360-degree sound system, they've raised the bar even higher.
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, a bit tricky. The dome's unique design presented some challenges for the audio setup.
Overcoming Obstacles for an Immersive Experience
The dome's low-reaching structure and thick walls meant that speakers couldn't be placed behind the dome or in certain positions that would block the projectors. Aaron Holloway-Nahum, head of immersive at d&b partner Southby Productions, designed the system and explained the difficulties.
"The biggest challenge was ensuring the speakers didn't interfere with the projectors. We had to be creative with our placement and adjust our initial design to achieve the best possible sound experience."
The solution? A ring of 16 d&b 5S compact point source loudspeakers, driven by 5D amplifiers, and four E15X-SUB compact subwoofers. The DS100 signal processor ensures each speaker delivers a natural, true sound, creating an immersive audio environment.
And this is the part most people miss: the subwoofers can also be used as a conventional sub array for more traditional performances, offering versatility to CULTVR's diverse events.
A Sound Experience Like No Other
With this innovative setup, CULTVR's Theatre Dome offers an unparalleled audio experience, enhancing their cutting-edge shows and experiences.
So, what do you think? Is this the future of immersive arts? Or is there another way to achieve such an immersive sound experience? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
