Get ready to dive into the fascinating world of Critical Role, where two unsung heroes are shaping its future! Behind the scenes, Ed Lopez and Ben Van Der Fluit are the masterminds orchestrating Critical Role's rise to legendary status.
These two executives have been with the eight co-founders for a decade, and now they're sharing their vision for the brand's future. But here's where it gets controversial... they're not just aiming for success; they want Critical Role to become a lasting legacy.
When the cameras roll, Lopez and Van Der Fluit are the unsung heroes, ensuring the business runs smoothly. They recently sat down with Business Insider to unveil their plans for Critical Role's evolution.
From its humble beginnings as a Twitch stream, Critical Role has grown into a multimedia powerhouse. Lopez, the COO, and Van Der Fluit, SVP of Business and Content Development, have been instrumental in this transformation.
"Ed and I had the privilege of working closely with the founders from the start, envisioning Critical Role beyond just a show," Van Der Fluit reminisced.
Over the years, Critical Role has expanded its horizons, with each co-founder specializing in different areas. While some focus on animations and book publishing, others oversee merchandise and programming. And this is the part most people miss... Lopez and Van Der Fluit manage the administrative side, from partnering with brands to developing content.
In the early days, Critical Role's expansion felt organic, like publishing comics to extend the Twitch stream's reach. But the brand has since accelerated its growth, launching major projects like their Amazon-backed animated series ahead of schedule.
"We have a general roadmap for where we want to take the business, but we're not rigidly stuck to a traditional plan," Lopez explained. "We adapt to our fans' demands and the community's needs."
Critical Role's flagship game, "Daggerheart," sold out worldwide within a week of its May launch. "It's a great problem to have, but it's changing our perspective on the game's potential," Lopez added.
To fuel their creative endeavors, Darrington Press, Critical Role's game publishing arm, hired Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford, former senior creatives at Wizards of the Coast, the makers of "D&D." "We've always been friends, but the timing wasn't right until now," Lopez said.
Critical Role continues to explore new collaborations, venturing into the food and beverage sector and even considering footwear. "We want to work with companies that 'vibe' with us and understand our vision," Lopez emphasized.
While the co-founders value their independence, they're open to private equity or venture capital funding for growth. "We'll be cautious and aware of the implications if such an opportunity arises," Lopez assured.
Van Der Fluit is focused on expanding Critical Role into video games, with their first video game in development with AdHoc Studio. "We're working to ensure the business has longevity beyond our time," Lopez said.
Lopez hinted at a wider variety of Critical Role content and new faces on the stream to "continue the legacy." They're also targeting a younger audience beyond Twitch and YouTube viewers.
So, what's next for Critical Role? Will it maintain its current form, or will it evolve to reach new heights? The future is uncertain, but one thing's for sure: Lopez and Van Der Fluit are steering the ship towards a bright and exciting future.
