Kansas State Baseball 2026 Opening Weekend: Wildcats Kick Off Season in Arizona! (2026)

The roar of the crowd is back! Kansas State Baseball is igniting the diamond for their 2026 season opener, and the anticipation is palpable.

Forget the winter chill, because baseball season is officially upon us! The Kansas State Wildcats are trading in their hibernation for the Arizona sun this weekend, kicking off their 2026 campaign with some seriously ambitious goals. After making a splash in the NCAA Tournament for the second year running, the Wildcats are ready to prove they're a force to be reckoned with.

A Core of Talent Returns, Ready to Shine

The Wildcats are bringing back a formidable group of seasoned players from last year's tournament squad. Leading the charge in the outfield is the dazzling AJ Evasco, who earned 2025 Freshman All-American honors. The infield is looking solid with Dee Kennedy making a strategic move to shortstop after a stellar run at third base, alongside the reliable Bear Madliak behind the plate and Shintaro Inoue at second base. On the mound, the reliable Lincoln Sheffield is back to anchor the weekend rotation.

But here's where it gets interesting: Kyan Lodice, a seasoned outfielder and designated hitter entering his 5th season, is back after an injury-plagued 2025 that limited him to just 28 games. And he won't be alone! Joining him off the injury list is RHP Carson Liggett. Touted as a highly-touted transfer from Louisville before last season, Liggett's 2025 was unfortunately wiped out by Tommy John surgery. His return is a massive boost for the pitching staff.

Addressing the Gaps: Offense and Pitching Reloaded

While the Wildcats will certainly feel the absence of shortstop Maximus Martin and LHP Jacob Frost, who were selected in the 2025 MLB Draft, the team has impressively managed to retain nearly 50% of their offensive production across all major statistical categories. This includes a significant 54.7% of their overall run production! On the pitching side, they're bringing back 44.8% of their wins and a solid 49% of their innings pitched.

A Transfer Class Poised for Impact

This 2026 Wildcats squad is further strengthened by a Top 25 transfer class. Leading the charge is East Tennessee transfer 3B Grant Gallagher. He's already making waves, with D1Baseball.com anointing him the preseason #1 third-baseman in the Big 12 and #11 nationally. His arrival signals a serious upgrade for the hot corner.

The Opening Weekend Gauntlet: Arizona Awaits

The Wildcats are set to launch their 2026 season at the MLB Desert Invitational in Scottsdale, Arizona. Their opening weekend slate is a tough one:

  • Friday, February 13th, 2pm CT: Iowa
  • Saturday, February 14th, 6pm CT: UConn
  • Sunday, February 15th, 1pm CT: Penn State
  • Monday, February 16th, 2pm CT: Air Force

The expectation is for the Wildcats to leave Arizona with a winning record, but a perfect 4-0 start would be the ultimate statement.

Where to Catch the Action

Fans can tune into all four games on KMAN in Manhattan and stream online at KStateSports.com/watch, with Brian Smoller on the call. While all games should be available to watch on MLB.com, K-State unfortunately did not secure any broadcasts on the MLB Network.

Game 1: A Familiar Foe in the Desert

This afternoon, the Wildcats will face the Iowa Hawkeyes for the 28th time at Goodyear Ballpark. Their last encounter at this very event in 2023 saw Iowa narrowly win 6-5. However, K-State holds a historical advantage with a 17-10 series lead. The Wildcats will be looking to extend that lead with James Guyette on the mound. Last season, Guyette was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention as a reliever, posting a 4.70 ERA in a team-leading 24 appearances. He finished 4-3 in games he influenced and struck out 51 batters.

Iowa is coming off a 32-22-1 season in 2025, but narrowly missed an NCAA Tournament at-large bid despite a strong 21-9 record in Big Ten play. They'll counter with RHP Tyler Guerin, who had a 7.02 ERA in 14 appearances with two starts last year.

Game 2: A Showdown with UConn

Saturday night promises the toughest test of the invitational as the Wildcats face the preseason Big East favorites, UConn Huskies, at 6pm CT from Scottsdale Stadium. UConn had an impressive 38-21 overall record in 2025, with a dominant 17-4 mark in the Big East. Despite their success, they also missed out on an at-large bid, falling short of conference champion Creighton. The Huskies are expected to start LHP Cayden Suchy, who posted a 5.93 ERA with a 3-4 record in nine appearances (four starts) as a freshman.

And this is the part most people miss: the Wildcats are slated to send sophomore Donte Lewis to the mound. Lewis was a true two-way player in his freshman year, notching a 6.63 ERA with two wins in 12 appearances and three mid-week starts. He also contributed at the plate, playing in 37 games with 23 starts, recording 17 hits, 13 walks, a .375 OB%, and seven stolen bases. This is only the second meeting between these two programs, with UConn taking the win in 2024.

Game 3: Battling the Nittany Lions

Sunday afternoon, the Wildcats will face the Penn State Nittany Lions at 1pm CT from Sloan Park. Penn State is coming off a strong 2025 season with 33 wins, their second-highest total in program history and the first time exceeding 30 wins since 2011. K-State has a 3-1 all-time advantage against Penn State, though their last meeting was in 2007. The Wildcats secured a 4-1 victory then, nearly 19 years to the day before this upcoming Sunday game!

The Nittany Lions are expected to debut freshman righty Isaiah Shayter on the mound. K-State will counter with their veteran lefty, Lincoln Sheffield. Sheffield closed out last season on a high note, winning his last four starts, including a dominant performance in the 2025 NCAA Regional where he went 6.2 innings, allowing just four hits and striking out six in a 7-4 win. He finished his debut season in 2025 with a 7-4 record in 16 appearances (15 starts) and a 5.45 ERA as the regular Sunday starter.

Game 4: A Series Finale Against Air Force

To wrap up the invitational on Monday at 2pm CT, the Wildcats will take on Air Force at Sloan Park. The Falcons finished last season with a 20-34 overall record and a 12-18 mark in Mountain West play. K-State holds a commanding 14-5 series lead, though it feels like they've played more frequently than that record suggests. Their last encounter in 2023 saw them split a mid-week series.

Air Force has yet to name a starter for Monday's game. The Wildcats are expected to send junior right-hander Tanner Duke to the hill. Duke posted a 4.97 ERA in his first season at K-State last year, going 2-3 with 13 appearances and seven starts, all in mid-week contests.

What are your predictions for K-State's opening weekend? Do you think they'll go 4-0, or will the desert prove too challenging? Let us know in the comments below!
