Reports even suggest the province previously shelved the idea in 2021 due to safety and construction risks, though these documents remain hidden from public view.
Ford envisions a three-level tunnel, spanning 50 kilometers from Mississauga to Scarborough, with dedicated lanes for traffic in both directions and a separate level for transit. He argues it's crucial to combat the growing congestion on the 400-series highways. However, the province has released minimal data to support the plan's feasibility or cost-effectiveness, leaving many skeptical.
A $9.1 million feasibility study, awarded to WSP Canada Inc., is underway, but results won't be available until 2027. This lengthy timeline, coupled with the project's exclusion from the federal government's recent infrastructure priorities, raises further doubts.
Opposition Leader Marit Stiles has dubbed the tunnel Ford's "ego project," a sentiment echoed by the poll results. Only 6% of respondents ranked the tunnel as the GTA's top transit priority. A significant 39% prioritized improving local roads, intersections, and existing highways, while 33% advocated for enhanced public transit.

While Ford's PC Party maintains a comfortable lead in voter support (44%), the tunnel proposal itself faces an uphill battle. The poll, conducted December 5-7 with a margin of error of +/- 3.09 percentage points, surveyed 1,000 Ontarians, revealing a public both hopeful for congestion relief and wary of the project's potential pitfalls.
